Daniel & Cherie Houston
Bio & Philosophy
Daniel Houston has been enthusiastically promoting health and fitness professionally for 15 years. He formed Houston Fitness Consultants in 1997, and with his wife, Cherie, they are promoting a cost-efficient, practical exercise program designed to bridge the gap between the fitness and medical communities., making exercise appealing and productive for all age groups.
Daniel is certified by the American Council on Exercise as a Clinical Exercise Specialist, Personal Trainer, and Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant. He is also certified with NFPT, and maintains affiliations with ACSM, AAPT, and NASM. Cherie maintains certifications from ACE as a Personal Trainer, Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant and CPT through WITS.
Their philosophy on exercise is about “balance” and “the Chile Pepper Approach to Exercise”, a unique method of relating exercise tolerance to individual tolerance for “heat”. The approach is fun, informative, motivating and has left a positive impression on thousands of clients ranging from CEO’s and politicians to fireman, police, doctors, seniors, and professional athletes, along with people of all ages interested in making positive changes in their lives.
After years of working in the automotive field, Dan made the leap to self-improvement and self-employment in the highly turbulent fitness industry. Through extensive research and application, inquiry and self-testing, he had refined his training technique to work with people regardless of age or condition. This approach works with cancer survivors, AIDS patients, RA and osteoarthritis patients, as well as young athletes, customizing each workout to address the individual’s abilities and recovery. The approach has helped Dan to completely control the asthma that prevented him from enjoying the activities many take for granted. It was because of his health problems that Dan had the desire to help others overcome similar health issues.
The success of this approach is evident in the success of their clients, more than fifty of Dan and Cherie’s clients have become certified personal trainers. They discovered that they COULD make the progress they wanted, that they enjoyed their exercise, and that they wanted other people to enjoy the same success. Dan and Cherie met when Cherie realized it was time for her to make the step to a more healthy life: she was a client!
When she made the progress she had always wanted to make, she renewed her lifelong goal of being in the health and nutrition field. Prior to learning about incorporating proper resistance training, Cherie had long been involved in nutrition and cardio exercise. When Cherie made the significant changes in her physique (at age 43!), she was excited to see the people she knew make the same progress. It was a short time later that Cherie had acquired her personal training certification, established many clients, and decided to leave the financial business to change careers. One year later, a friendship turned into an amazing relationship, they were wed shortly after!
Through his passions for his wife, his family, his friends, their dog Cayenne, and his hobbies, (ranging from restoring his 1970 Corvette, classic cars to chile peppers, cooking, photography, drawing, his koi pond, music and movies…and, oddly, aliens) Dan maintains a highly motivated approach to life. Constantly finding ways to be more productive and looking for answers to life’s questions, he has fun doing just about everything, and has numerous activities and projects in the works, including his pet project, The Global Warming Salsa Company; a way for Dan to combine his passion for food, health, chile peppers, cars and the environment (not an easy task!). Cherie is kind enough to humor Dan in some of his ventures, and also runs her own crafting business with her oldest daughter and granddaughter: Did I mention the three grandchildren?!
Daniel has contributed articles to numerous publications, is a contributing author on the book “The Power of Champions” along with 55 of the top fitness minds in the industry, and the upcoming book “Breaking Down the Barriers”. He is currently finishing up his books “Turning up the Heat: The Chile Pepper Approach to Exercise” and “The Eight- Week Metabolic Tune-Up”. Also in the works is his project on an illustrated children’s exercise book, a dream he has been working on for years. Helping to improve the outlook for children and meet the fight with obesity head-on, the Houston Fitness Consulting team is well on their way to making a significant difference in their future.
