This Week's Fact & Fiction
Fiction
- No pain, No Gain
Fact
- We have all heard the old saying "no pain, no gain". For most it probably brings back not so pleasant memories of your gym class. Well you will be glad to know that the idea that you need to break through some insurmountable pain barrier to benefit from exercise is not true. In fact the opposite might be more accurate.
Pain is the body's response to injury and is a safety mechanism to prevent further injury. Of course there are different levels & types of pain, and while some discomfort is common after working out, if you feel pain while you are performing an exercise chances are you are doing something wrong. Working through pain is also not very advisable. If something hurts it is best to stop and rest and see if the pain goes away.
